Key Responsibilities of a toolmaker:
· Design, manufacture, and assemble precision CNC jigs and fixtures for milling, turning, and multi-axis operations.
· Design, manufacture, repair, and maintain press tools (including progression, blanking, forming, piercing, and compound tools).
· Interpret complex engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications to produce tooling to tight tolerances.
· Operate and program CNC machines (mills, lathes, and grinders) for toolmaking purposes.
· Modify, refurbish, and maintain existing jigs, fixtures, and press tools to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
· Collaborate with production, CNC machinists, press operators, and design engineers to develop and optimise tooling solutions that improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance product quality.
· Troubleshoot tooling-related issues in both CNC and press shop environments and implement effective corrective actions.
· Maintain a clean, safe, and organised toolroom environment in line with 5S and company health & safety standards.
· Document all tooling designs, modifications, repairs, and maintenance records.
Essential Requirements of a toolmaker:
· Time-served Toolmaker Apprentice – Must have completed a formal apprenticeship (e.g., NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds or equivalent) in Toolmaking or Precision Engineering.
· Proven experience in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of press tools.
· Strong experience in the manufacture of CNC jigs and fixtures.
· Ability to work accurately from detailed engineering drawings and 3D CAD models.
· Competent in the use of both conventional and CNC machine tools.
· High level of skill in precision fitting, hand finishing, assembly, and tool setting.
· Proficient in the use of a wide range of precision measuring instruments.
